Hurricane Katrina

The Government disaster; Katrina

Sixteen years ago, New Orleans was nearly destroyed. It was giving signs of bad governance—and it still is.

Hurricane Katrina; THE unexpected.

abstract painting of an distant view of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans - smoky sky, orange fire, lots of dark blues

A tropical depression, that became Hurricane Katrina was formed over the Bahamas during August 23rd of 2005. Already giving fear to the ones in New Orleans, and New Orleans specifically, As they were the ones at high risks. Hurricane Katrina made landfall off the coast of Louisiana on August 29, 2005. Showing it's ever-lasting effects, its winds reached speeds higher than 120 miles per hour.

And knowing how much of an impact it made it also became the costliest storm on record to date, A $108 billion on property damage alone. The horrible aftermath of Hurricane Katrina caused questioning to the safety of natural disaster victims, and lack of preparedness for the storm. As this irresponsibility by the government had been going on for years. Katrina's victims and many of those who lost their homes faced years of  hardships as this effect would damage New Orleans forever.

Best described by even the U.S president himself - Ten years after the disaster, then-President Barack Obama said of Katrina;

"What started out as a natural disaster became a man-made disaster, a failure of government to look out for its own citizens."

The flood

So yes, It IS the the government's fault at putting the lives of the many homeless, helpless, and innocent at risk. How many lives? Hundreds, Thousands. There are millions for war but not barely even a cup of water for the ones still living in New Orleans. Listen, The government will lie to youNot to be too politically correct but not too wrong eithersaying they weren't prepared for this disaster at all, and THAT is the cause; It is that they weren't prepared for this and wouldn't prepare for this. New Yorker perfectly summarises the fact most political leaders aren't ready to accept at all;

"By the standards of one’s middle-school geography class, New Orleans ought to be one of America’s most prosperous cities, instead of one of its poorest."

On top of that we have New Orleans relationship with nature and the sea that is as old as time, literally. Half of the city is below sea level, which gave an open way for Katrina to enter its winds into the city. However the government was undeniably so irresponsible in 2005 that it refused to rescue people in the completely flooded New Orleans and refused to pay for any damages caused. You would think I'm not fair on blaming the government for this but it just shows doesn't it.

Hurricane Katrina and Its Aftermath in the Art of Rolland Golden - Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia - Georgia Museum of Art at the University of Georgia

I will never NOT call it a Government disaster over a 'Natural' disaster because it was the Government— that till this day is keeping from the fact that they are to blame for risking the lives of so many innocents. I don't think it is possible to call Hurricane Katrina a hurricane at all, therefor a flood or anything in between that.

Rather how I'd like to call it; ''A government disaster'' is the way I'd put it. New Orleans is a cityIf you want to call it thatthat is now completely abandoned, and the government is partially if not the ACTUAL reason for its current state. Almost everyone has been evacuated from the city after the horrendous Katrina, Now that totally isn't an American dream. 2005 might just be around the corner again now. Life really isn't so sweet after all.
